The “Mommy Makeover”: Reclaiming Your Pre-Baby Body

What Is a “Mommy Makeover”?

Pregnancy can take a toll on different areas of the body: The breasts enlarge in preparation for milk production, the abdomen acquires stretch marks and skin loosens to accommodate the growing baby, and cellulite appears or increases in the thighs and buttocks. Furthermore, the surge in hormones before, during, and after pregnancy causes unwanted weight gain that can be resistant to diet and exercise.

For some women, these areas that become loose, saggy, and deflated during pregnancy return to their original positions after giving birth, but for the majority of women, this is not the case. What can they do if they are uncomfortable with their post-baby body? The “Mommy Makeover” is a term used to describe a combination of complementary cosmetic procedures that work to help women reclaim their pre-baby body. These procedures remove fat, tighten loose skin, and target the areas most affected by pregnancy, such as the breasts, abdomen, waist, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes genitalia.

Who Is a Candidate, and Why Get a Mommy Makeover?

The best time to seek out a Mommy Makeover is at least 9-12 months after delivery for mothers who choose not to breastfeed or 6-9 months after ending breastfeeding for mothers who choose to breastfeed. The reason for the long wait time is that it takes time to adjust and recover from pregnancy-related changes. It’s also recommended that women have completed all childbearing, as no one recommends going through a Mommy Makeover only to have the results reversed by a subsequent pregnancy.

Women have many different reasons for wanting a Mommy Makeover, but some of the more common reasons are:

Diet and exercise are not cutting it

Gaining excess weight is a reality of pregnancy. After giving birth, many women retain resistant pockets of fat despite meticulous attention to diet and exercise.

A boost in self-confidence

After pregnancy, many women tend to feel that their body doesn’t look or feel like their body anymore. They may feel less attractive, want their clothes to fit better, or to feel more confident in a bikini and have their “beach body” for summer.

A reward

You’ve worked hard for the family you’ve always wanted! Now, it’s time to treat yourself and improve your appearance as well as your emotional and physical well-being.

What are some Mommy Makeover Procedures?

There are a number of cosmetic procedures that may be combined for a Mommy Makeover:

  • VASERlipo is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional liposuction selectively breaks up areas of fat both large and small using ultrasound waves.
  • Venus Legacy™ is a non-invasive body sculpting technique that incorporates two types of heat energy to tighten loose skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite.
