What Is miraDry?
Is your excessive underarm sweat causing you social embarrassment? Are you tired of the constantly stained clothing or the daily application of antiperspirants/deodorants? miraDry® may be the answer for you. miraDry is currently the singular non-invasive, FDA-cleared procedure that is designed to stop underarm sweat in its tracks. It is a state-of-the-art treatment for excessive underarm sweating (a clinical diagnosis of “axillary hyperhidrosis”).
How Does miraDry Work?
The excessive sweating cure, miraDry, works by targeting and destroying the sweat glands that cause the excessive wetness and even odor in the armpits. The miraDry procedure utilizes proprietary technology called “miraWave energy” to go beneath the surface of the skin and annihilate the sweat glands to stop armpit sweat. The electromagnetic energy is delivered via a handheld device, which precisely targets problem areas. The energy causes the targeted area to heat up, which causes the destruction of the sweat glands in a process called thermolysis. Contrary to popular belief, the destruction of armpit sweat glands has no significant impact on health, as they make up only 2% of the 2 million total sweat glands in the body.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect from miraDry?
Results from the miraDry procedure are instantaneous, long lasting, and immediately noticeable. Most patients notice a drastic decrease in the amount of underarm sweat, which in short order totally ceases. It should be remembered that destroyed sweat glands cannot regenerate and are lost forever. It also should be kept in mind, as with any procedure/treatment, the results may differ from patient to patient. As a result, it is imperative that patients discuss their expectations with the healthcare professional performing their miraDry procedure.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients see tremendous results with just one treatment with the miraDry system. For ideal results, a second miraDry procedure may be recommended 3 months after the initial treatment. Occasionally, a third procedure may be needed for the desired results. Regardless, the healthcare professional performing the miraDry procedure will determine the most appropriate treatment plan for optimal results.
Is There Any Downtime? Are There Any Side Effects?
Depending on the patient, the downtime is minimal to none. The procedure to stop underarm sweat is outpatient, which means there is no required hospitalization and most patients resume regular activity (and work) immediately after the miraDry procedure. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and patients report minimal to no pain. The miraDry procedure has an excellent record of safety (over 55,000 procedures have been performed worldwide to stop armpit sweat). Common minor side effects of the procedure include swelling, tenderness, and/or redness in the armpit area. Less commonly, tingling and numbness in the armpit area and/or upper arm may occur after the miraDry procedure. All of these side effects are short-lived, resolving in a few days to a few weeks.
