Is MiraDry Right for Me?

Have you been embarrassed by a deluge of underarm sweat more than once? If hiding your profuse sweating is a regular occurrence for you, and things like stained clothing and frequent applications of deodorants and antiperspirants have become part of your day to day, miraDry may be the perfect answer. Here are some of the facts about the procedure to help you decide if miraDry is right for you.

How Does MiraDry Work?

miraDry is an FDA-cleared technology for eliminating underarm sweating. Whether you have an actual diagnosis of “axillary hyperhidrosis,” which is excessive sweating under the arms, or you just feel the amount of underarm sweating your body does is excessive, the miraDry procedure will eliminate all sweating in the area.

The non-invasive miraDry process works by delivering carefully controlled electromagnetic energy via a handheld device to the underarm skin. The energy targets the precise area of the skin that is the home of the sweat glands in order to use heat to decompose them. This treatment is called thermolysis, and it is safe and comfortable as the outermost layers of the skin are protected and cooled as the process goes on.

What to Expect from MiraDry

One of the reasons that patients love miraDry is that sweat glands that have been decomposed by heat do not grow back. For this reason, the effects of the treatment are immediately noticeable, which is a highly satisfying result. The results are also permanent, since the glands don’t regenerate. Many patients need only a single treatment, but to ensure ideal results, two miraDry procedures with three months in between are typically recommended—and occasionally a third treatment. Dr. Cuber will discuss the best way to proceed based on your unique case.

Your miraDry procedure will take place in one short hour here in our office. You’ll be comfortable thanks to local anesthesia, and you’ll experience little to no discomfort or downtime thanks to miraDry. After the procedure ice packs and a mild over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen is all most patients need to stay comfortable, and most return to work and other normal activities right after their procedure.

Common side effects of miraDry are minor, and typically include swelling under the arms, along with tenderness and/or redness for several days. In some rare cases tingling and numbness in the armpit or upper arm can occur for up to 5 weeks.

Aren’t Sweat Glands Important to Health?

Yes, but there’s no reason that you need them under your arms!  Sweating is a critical body function because it helps you control your core temperature. However, when you treat the area under your arms with miraDry, you’re losing less than 2% of the sweat glands your body has. This has no practicable effect on your body’s ability to regulate your temperature, and you won’t find yourself sweating more in other places, for example, to “make up” for your lost underarm sweat.
