What Is Hyperhidrosis?

The term “hyperhidrosis” literally means “abnormal condition of excessive sweating.” It is estimated that 3% of the population of the United States suffers from excessive sweating. Most often and notably, the condition occurs in the palms, feet, armpits, or head. The condition may lead to sweaty palms and/or sweat marks on clothing, which can lead to anxiety and social embarrassment. It is healthy to sweat, as it cools the body and prevents overheating. But this excessive sweating leads to the question, “How to stop sweating?”

How Is the Hyperhidrosis Procedure Performed?

There are many ways to treat excessive sweating, but by far the most commonly treated is excessive underarm sweat. The latest state-of-the-art procedures for hyperhidrosis in this area are  the miraDry® and PrecisionTx™ laser systems.

While both procedures utilize a local anesthetic to minimize patient discomfort, they go about reducing sweat in different ways. The miraDry system is a non-invasive (meaning non-surgical) FDA-cleared scientific technology designed to combat excessive sweating. The miraDry machine, which is hand-held, is used to precisely direct electromagnetic energy (“miraWave” energy) just beneath the surface of the skin to destroy overactive sweat glands with heat. The PrecisionTx laser system is a minimally invasive technique to put an end to underarm sweat. Through a tiny incision in the armpit area, laser energy is precisely directed to destroy sweat glands with heat.

How Many Treatments Can a Patient Expect?

Both the miraDry and PrecisionTx laser underarm sweat treatments take about one hour to complete. miraDry can provide significant underarm sweat reduction with just 1 treatment, but a second treatment 3 months after the first is usually recommended. Most patients require only 1 treatment with the PrecisionTx laser to get optimal results.

What Kind of Results Can a Patient Expect from a Hyperhidrosis Treatment?

The results of hyperhidrosis treatment with the miraDry or PrecisionTx laser systems are immediate, noticeable, and long-lasting. Once destroyed, sweat glands cannot regenerate, which means patients can wave goodbye to stained clothing, repeated applications of antiperspirants/deodorants, and any anxiety regarding social situations that would typically cause stress. Indeed, both the miraDry and PrecisionTx laser systems can provide an answer to the question, “How to reduce sweating?”

What Kind of Downtime/Side Effects Should Patients Expect?

Both miraDry and PrecisionTx do not require any downtime to heal. While miraDry patients may experience tenderness, swelling, redness, tingling, and/or numbness in the armpit area for a few days to a few weeks, they are able to return to work and daily activities immediately. PrecisionTx heals very quickly due to the smallness of the incisions, but you may experience some swelling in the treatment area.
