What Is Sculptra and What Procedures Is It Used For?
Sculptra®, approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009, is a unique injectable skin filler. It is made of a synthetic material, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is biocompatible (contains neither animal products nor human DNA) and biodegradable. Sculptra can be used for filling in nasolabial folds, otherwise known as “smile lines,” that extend from the corners of the mouth to the nose, marionette lines that extend vertically down the chin from the corners of the mouth, and skin depressions or hollows like sunken cheeks as a result of significant weight loss or disease, as well as butt enhancement.
How Is Sculptra Unique?
Sculptra is unique among dermal fillers because it stimulates the natural production of collagen by the body. This is something that the two most popular injectable dermal fillers—Juvéderm® and Restylane®—cannot accomplish. Collagen is a crucial component of healthy skin and its production wanes as we age. As the PLLA molecules in Sculptra undergo resorption by the body, they are replaced with new collagen fibers that rejuvenate the structure of skin. Additionally, no allergy skin testing is required, which would be required if using Bellafill®, another collagen stimulator.
What Is the Sculptra Butt Lift, and How Does It Differ from the Brazilian Butt Lift?
The Sculptra Butt Lift is a 100% non-invasive, non-surgical procedure providing butt enhancement. Before this revolutionary idea, the options for butt augmentation were predominantly surgical—the Brazilian butt lift or butt implants. Additionally, the Brazilian butt lift requires liposuction, while the Sculptra Butt Lift only requires pain-free injections of the dermal filler into the buttocks. While the results of a Brazilian butt lift are often startling, butt enhancement with Sculptra is a bit subtler but just as impressive. Most importantly, there is no downtime associated with the Sculptra Butt Lift and minimal side effects, whereas there is significant downtime and the potential for serious side effects associated with the Brazilian butt lift.
What Can I Expect with a Sculptra Butt Lift?
After the administration of a topical numbing agent, Sculptra filler is injected into the buttocks with very thin needles. The procedure can be completed in as little as 20 minutes. Most patients receive a total of 2 treatment sessions scheduled 1 month apart and, on average, require a total of 20 vials (5 vials per buttock per treatment session). The results are subtle and immediately noticeable and continue to improve as new collagen replaces the PLLA molecules. Optimal results can be expected about 6 months after the procedure and can last anywhere from 2 to 3 years after the Sculptra injections.
The most common side effects of treatment with Sculptra are injection site swelling, tenderness, redness, and itching. Other less common side effects may include small or large lumps under the skin, which can be medically treated if needed.
